Jack Russell Terriers are native to England. The country is famous for its hunting traditions and is the motherland of many hunting breeds. Most of them emerged as a result of breeder's boundless desire and strive to produce a perfect hunting companion and a wonderful pet. The Jack Russell Terrier is not an exception to the rule.
The Reverend John Russell, a great enthusiast and hunter, has realized his dream to breed a super fox terrier, capable of displaying a considerable extent of agility, intelligence, and endurance during hunting sessions. John Russell bred a terrier, a bitch named Trump, to be precise, and achieved enormous success. Jack Russell Terriers - Breeders - Peculiar Traits
Due to its long legs and strength, the dog could easily keep up with horses. Relatively small size allowed it to go through a tunnel in a den and announce the presence of a fox to its owner. Besides, the Jack Russell of the 19th century had to be predominantly white in color, which allowed the hunter to distinguish between game and a dog. This color pattern is still present in modern versions of the Jack Russell.
In fact, the Jack Russell Terrier did not change much in the course of time. It stills retains its easy to groom coat, curiosity for everything that is going on around, and radiant health. The Jack Russell Terrier is one of the healthiest breeds. Breeding principles seem to be the key issue of the breed's good health.
Jack Russell Terriers - Breeders - Registries
Though the Jack Russell Terrier breed emerged in the second half of the 19th century, it was not registered until the year 1992. The UKC accepted the breed despite recommendations of the largest breed clubs in both the United States and Great Britain.
These organizations were not optimistic regarding the UKC registry due to disastrous effects it might lead to. Very often, the sole condition for a litter to be registered in an all-breed registry is that the parent dogs are registered with this organization. An all-breed registry cannot provide full examination of each litter born and give proper consideration to puppies' ability to be used in breeding programs.
Moreover, acceptance in a show ring makes breeders produce litters for conformation. Jack Russells bred for appearance lack physical attributes necessary for performing fieldwork.
Hence, Jack Russell Terrier fanciers opposed strongly to the idea of UKC registration. By ignoring breeders allied with the UKC, the JRTCA (the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America) and the JRTCGB (the Jack Russell Terrier Club of Great Britain) try to protect Jack Russell Terriers from turning into mere show dogs.
