Jack Russell Terriers breeders have always aimed at improving the working qualities of the dog and selected only robust dogs for breedings. As the result, there are some appearance differences within the breed. Some Jack Russell Terriers resemble the original version of the breed popular in England. Their legs are longer than the body.
Short-legged Jack Russell Terriers are not registered with the JRTCA. However, many breeders specialize in breeding this very type of the breed. The English Jack Russell Terrier Club Alliance, Inc. is dedicated to the promotion of the short-legged JRT and set its own standard. Ideally, this variety should stand about 8-12 inches at the shoulder. To compare, the long-legged JRT's height is about 12-14 inches. Hare-like feet are not a fault in the "Shorty," whereas the long-legged JRT should have only round, cat-like feet.
Whatever appearance, Jack Russell Terrier breeders should lay emphasis on a dog's personality. All Jack Russell Terriers should display courage, liveliness, and intelligence. A JRT that tends to be aggressive, shy, or nervous cannot be used in a breeding program.
Jack Russell Terriers - Breeders - Where to Register
Jack Russell Terrier breeders have a choice to make. There is no definite agreement on the issue of standards and aims of breeding. The JRTCA, the largest breed registry, does not allow UKC (United Kennel Club) and BKC (British Kennel Club) registered dogs to enter the organization. Breeders affiliated with the Parson Jack Russell Terrier Club or the Jack Russell Terrier Breeder's Association are also refused membership in the JRTCA.
Breeders who register their Jack Russell Terriers with the AKC (American Kennel Club) can take part in sanctioned AKC events. They should follow the official AKC standard and breed their dogs in accordance with the code of ethics. All the regulations have to be obeyed, for instance, calling the breed Parson Russell Terrier, which is effective April 1, 2003.
To become a JRTCA member, one has to supply all the necessary papers. They include a health guarantee approved by a certified veterinarian that claims the dog to be free of any hereditary defects. A pedigree that gives insight on four generations of the dog and a stud service certificate from the breeder whose dog was mated, are also necessary. Photos of a dog in various statures will make its conformity to the breed standard more evident. Note, that the JRTCA does not register Jack Russell Terriers under the age of twelve months old.
